Dispelling the Myth!

Given what you can see onstage, TV and in film, it is completely understandable when you hear that people feel that hypnosis only ever involves mind control. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Hypnosis is a collaborative process that involves deep relaxation and heightened focus leading to an increase in suggestibility. Under hypnosis you control the process entirely and cannot be made to do anything against your will. It just will not happen! As an active participant, you remain in control at all times.

What you see in the entertainment space is just that, it's entertainment. Fundamental to that process is the performer selecting their subjects. It is highly unlikely that they will ever select someone who they feel will not ‘’play the game.’’ In hypnotherapy it is the other way around. The client seeks out the hypnotherapist to provide them with relief from whatever their personal challenge is. The dynamic around the stage performer and their subject differs entirely from that of the therapist and the client. On the one hand you have the entertainer looking for the ‘’wow factor’’ and on the other, the clinical therapist looking to provide their client with healing and a pathway to a better and more balanced life.

Hypnotherapy is completely safe and can be a very effective technique using an individual’s natural ability to relax and refocus to bring about catharsis and healing. It is not, and never ever will be, about mind control.
