How will you know whether hypnotherapy is for you?

In truth, and this is just my opinion, I believe that hypnotherapy is for everyone. That said, it doesn’t mean that everyone will merely take to it and that success is guaranteed.
Hypnotherapy not only requires the skill, knowledge and experience of the therapist, more
importantly, it requires wholehearted by-in and belief of the individual as well. When I get asked this question, and it happens more often that not, my response is always the same – ‘’you won’t.’’ I always follow that up by saying ‘’I will facilitate and set the wheels of change in motion, you then need to have the belief and desire to run with it.’’ That’s a pretty simple but highly effective way of putting the point across.
Hypnotherapy is just so different to other forms of therapy in that it opens up and communicates directly with our life data base – the subconscious mind. We all accept suggestion every day of our lives, most of the time without actually recognising it. The adverts we see on TV. The instruction we receive from a line manage. The little piece of information passed on by a teacher or lecturer in a classroom. They are all forms of suggestion. Whilst under hypnosis, we become that little more susceptible to the power of suggestion but only if we let the hypnotic process run the way it needs to. As individuals we may all react differently in the chair and that is when it all comes down to belief and the desire to make long-term positive change.
As hypnotherapists, we are always happy to explain the process and benefits in full. The fact that someone actually speaks to a hypnotherapist in the first place, even if it is the simple ‘’what is it and will it work for me’’ kind of question immediately suggests interest. That, for me, is part of the battle won. If we can go that little bit further and establish desire and belief, we may well be onto something!
